Campaign 2011

As a parent and a teacher, I know the importance of good relationships in education. I am running for Pomona Unified School District’s Board in order to help form stronger relationships between the district and the community, the staff, and the students.

Our district has developed a framework for success that sounds excellent in theory, but which has not been full implemented.  My intention, when elected, is to fully implement the great concepts in this framework. There is much work to be done to build greater trust between the district and the communities that it serves and I am ready for that responsibility.

I have taught high school English for 12 years in the Chaffey School District, working primarily with at-risk teens. My children are in 1st and 4th grades in PUSD. My family has lived in Pomona since before I was born. Pomona is a special place and PUSD should be doing more to serve the community which supports it.

I am deeply involved with education issues as a classroom teacher and as a legislative advocate for education.  I serve on the California Teachers Association State Council as chair of the Alternative, Career/Technical Education Committee.  I have served as a delegate to the National Education Association Representative Assembly for the last 5 years. Most recently, I was appointed to serve as the teacher representative on the California Department of Education Field Partnership Team. My experiences working with multiple boards and around issues in education are invaluable assets that qualify me to do the work that must be done.

Education is at a crossroads in our state and nation.  Without qualified leaders in our school districts, the fate of our children is in question. Will we work to provide the best education possible or will we be forced to water down our curriculum, whittle away our resources, and waste the potential of an entire generation of students? You can help take a step in the right direction by supporting my campaign for Pomona’s school board.

Thank you Hank for all you do to advocate for public education on not only the local level but at the state and national level as well. Your experience will be put to excellent use as a governing school board member for the Pomona Unified School District. Congratulations on receiving the endorsement of the Associated Pomona Teachers!
